Folate as L-Methyltetrahydrofolate Calcium Salt

Folate as L-Methyltetrahydrofolate Calcium Salt

  • L-MTHF calcium salt is the most bioavailable form of folate, essential for genetic material synthesis and repair.
  • It plays a key role in reducing homocysteine levels, associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular diseases.
  • Adequate intake of L-MTHF calcium salt is linked to a decreased risk of age-related cognitive decline and certain cancers.
  • Research indicates its potential to enhance mood regulation and support prenatal health.
  • Studies on its impact on longevity are promising, focusing on its role in methylation processes and disease prevention.

What is Folate as L-Methyltetrahydrofolate Calcium Salt?

L-methyltetrahydrofolate calcium salt is the calcium salt form of L-MTHF, the most active form of folate in the human body.

Unlike synthetic folic acid, L-MTHF does not require conversion by the enzyme MTHFR to be utilised by the body, making it immediately available for crucial biological processes.

This form is particularly beneficial for individuals with genetic variations in the MTHFR gene, ensuring they receive the full benefits of folate supplementation.

Folate as L-Methyltetrahydrofolate Calcium Salt Impact on Aging

One study explored the relationship between MTHFR polymorphisms affecting folate metabolism and bone mineral density (BMD) in Chinese men and women. Although this study did not directly involve L-MTHF-Ca, it highlights the importance of folate metabolism on bone health, a significant factor in aging (R).

Folate as L-Methyltetrahydrofolate Calcium Salt and Longevity Studies

A study investigated the effects of adding levomefolate calcium (the calcium salt of L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate) to an oral contraceptive on folate levels in healthy women. This research primarily focused on contraception but indicated that L-MTHF-Ca could positively affect folate status, which is crucial for DNA repair, synthesis, and methylation, potentially impacting aging and longevity (R).

Research on folic acid, from which L-MTHF is derived, shows it can improve endothelial function and decrease superoxide production, which is critical for cardiovascular health and could indirectly affect longevity. This suggests that L-MTHF-Ca might benefit similarly by improving folate status (R).

A study highlighted the effectiveness of Metafolin (L-5-MTHF) in preventing complications in pregnancy and serious birth defects, suggesting its potential role in promoting health from early life, which could have long-term implications for aging and longevity (R).
