A New Blue Zone? What Bolotana, Sardinia, Could Teach You About Living Longer

A New Blue Zone? What Bolotana, Sardinia, Could Teach You About Living Longer

The Short Answer

Bolotana, Sardinia, is an exciting new candidate Blue Zone because recent demographic data show exceptional survival after age 70, particularly among women. Women reaching 70 had an estimated 13.83% probability of reaching 100 during the study period.

In one small Sardinian mountain village, researchers estimate that almost one in seven women who reach 70 could survive to 100. That remarkable finding puts Bolotana, a community of around 2,300 people, on the longevity map. (R) Even more intriguing, Bolotana sits around 110 kilometres from Sardinia’s original Blue Zone and appears to have a distinctly different longevity pattern. (R)

Why Is Bolotana Being Called a Possible New Blue Zone?

To understand the excitement, it helps to understand what a Blue Zone actually means scientifically. The term originated in demographic research that identified geographical areas with unusually high concentrations of people reaching exceptional ages. Sardinia’s original Blue Zone was identified in the island's mountainous central-eastern part, with particularly notable male longevity. (R)

Bolotana is different. Researchers analysed mortality and population records from 2021–2025 and constructed life tables, demographic tools that estimate survival at different ages. They focused on two measures: remaining life expectancy at 70 and the probability of surviving from 70 to exactly 100. (R)

For women, the numbers were extraordinary. At age 70, women in Bolotana had an estimated 20.85 years of remaining life expectancy. Their estimated probability of surviving from 70 to 100 was 13.83%, compared with 4.33% in Nuoro Province, 4.43% across Sardinia and 3.54% across Italy during the corresponding period. (R) Put simply, the recent data suggest that reaching 100 after your 70th birthday was unusually common among Bolotana’s women.

Almost 1 in 7 Women Reaching 70 Could Reach 100

During 2021–2025, women reaching age 70 in Bolotana had an estimated 13.83% probability of surviving to 100. That compares with 4.43% across Sardinia and 3.54% across Italy during the corresponding period. (R)

Why Are Bolotana’s Women So Interesting to Longevity Researchers?

Here is where the story becomes even more surprising. Historically, Sardinia’s original Blue Zone attracted attention partly because of its unusually strong male longevity. (R) Bolotana shows almost the reverse pattern.

During 2021–2025, men reaching 70 had an estimated 4.92% chance of reaching 100, while women had 13.83%. Women also had almost five additional years of remaining life expectancy at 70: 20.85 years versus 16.02 years for men. (R)

When researchers compared Bolotana with international longevity benchmarks, its female survival estimates were among the most favourable examined. For both remaining life expectancy at 70 and survival from 70 to 100, Bolotana’s women ranked second, behind Hong Kong, among the populations included in the comparison. (R)

A New Blue Zone? What Bolotana, Sardinia, Could Teach You About Living Longer

Different communities may reach remarkable old ages through different combinations of biological, environmental and social influences.

Is Bolotana’s Exceptional Longevity a Recent Phenomenon?

This may be one of the study's most interesting findings. When researchers looked at Bolotana during an earlier period, 2015–2019, its longevity advantage was substantially less pronounced. Women had an estimated 18.30 years of remaining life expectancy at 70 and just a 1.46% estimated probability of surviving from 70 to 100. (R)

By comparison, the 2021–2025 estimate for female survival from 70 to 100 was 13.83%. ( R) This does not prove that longevity suddenly improved eight- or nine-fold. Bolotana is a very small population, extreme-age events are uncommon, and estimates can fluctuate considerably over short periods. The researchers specifically caution that the magnitude of Bolotana’s apparent advantage depends on the calendar period studied. (R)

But it raises a fascinating question: are you looking at a long-standing longevity hotspot that has only recently become highly visible statistically, a favourable group of birth cohorts moving through later life, or something else? That is now worth investigating.

Why the Recent Numbers Need Caution

Bolotana has a small population and reaching extreme ages is rare. That means a relatively small number of deaths or centenarians can substantially affect short-term survival estimates. Researchers therefore need longer observation before determining how persistent the recent longevity advantage really is.

How Do Researchers Know Bolotana’s Centenarians Really Reached 100?

Exceptional longevity research has an unusual challenge: before asking why people reach 100, researchers need strong evidence that they actually did. Bolotana offers unusually detailed historical records.

Civil birth documentation was available for all identified centenarians, and researchers independently cross-checked 97% of recorded centenarian deaths against parish archives. Researchers compared details including names, dates and parentage to confirm identities and ages. (R)

The researchers also examined 3,060 people born in Bolotana between 1900 and 1925. Of these, 38 were documented as reaching 100, equivalent to an Extreme Longevity Index of 1,242 centenarians per 100,000 live births. (R) This historical evidence matters because it suggests Bolotana’s longevity story extends beyond the centenarians alive today.

What Could Be Helping People in Bolotana Live So Long?

This is the question everyone wants answered, but the current research does not yet tell you. The researchers identify several plausible areas for future investigation, including genetics, dietary patterns, physical activity, family support, social cohesion, residential continuity and access to healthcare. However, this study was demographic rather than an individual-level lifestyle investigation, so it cannot establish that any of these factors caused Bolotana’s exceptional survival. (R)

That distinction is important. It is tempting to turn longevity communities into simple formulas involving a particular food, walking habit or daily ritual. The more scientifically interesting possibility is that exceptional longevity emerges from interactions between your biology, lifelong behaviours, physical environment and social world. Bolotana now gives researchers a remarkably focused population to study those interactions.

A New Blue Zone? What Bolotana, Sardinia, Could Teach You About Living Longer

What Can You Learn From Bolotana Right Now?

For now, Bolotana is best viewed as a longevity laboratory rather than a longevity prescription. The study provides compelling evidence of exceptional recent late-life survival, especially among women, but it does not establish which behaviours produced it. The authors therefore describe Bolotana as a candidate longevity Blue Zone, not an established one. (R)

That makes the next phase particularly exciting. If researchers can compare Bolotana’s exceptionally long-lived women with other Sardinian and international populations, they may begin separating the influence of genetics, environment, movement, food, healthcare and social connection.

For you, the broader message is encouraging: healthy ageing is shaped across a lifetime, and communities such as Bolotana give scientists a natural opportunity to understand what conditions may support vitality and survival well into later life.

FAQs About Bolotana and the New Blue Zone Research

Is Bolotana Officially a New Blue Zone?

Not yet. Researchers conclude that Bolotana has demographic characteristics consistent with a candidate longevity Blue Zone, but it needs longer observation and continued validation before it can be considered established. (R)

What Is the Most Remarkable Finding From Bolotana?

The standout result is female late-life survival. During 2021–2025, women who reached 70 had an estimated 13.83% probability of reaching 100, more than three times the corresponding value reported for US women in the study’s international comparison. (R)

Is Bolotana Part of Sardinia’s Original Blue Zone?

No. Bolotana lies approximately 110 kilometres from the originally identified Sardinian Blue Zone. (R) Researchers identified the original longevity region in central-eastern mountainous Sardinia, which became particularly notable for exceptional male longevity. (R)

Why Might Women in Bolotana Live So Long?

Scientists do not yet know. Genetics, diet, physical activity, family support, social cohesion and other environmental or healthcare factors are plausible areas for investigation, but the current study was not designed to determine cause and effect. (R)

Does Living in a Blue Zone Guarantee a Longer Life?

No. Blue Zones describe population-level patterns, not guarantees for individuals. Even in Bolotana, most people who reach 70 are not predicted to reach 100. What these communities offer is something scientifically valuable: clues about the biological, behavioural, environmental and social conditions associated with exceptional longevity.

Bolotana Gives Longevity Researchers a Fascinating New Lead

Bolotana may ultimately prove to be a new Blue Zone, or further data may reveal a more complex story. Either way, its remarkable women are giving longevity researchers a new opportunity to understand what thriving into your 90s and beyond can look like.
