Interestingly, the microbiomes of postmenopausal women became more similar to those of men than the microbiomes of premenopausal women were. What Is the Estrobolome and Why Does It Matter During Menopause?
Your gut does more than digest food. Some intestinal microbes contain genes involved in oestrogen metabolism, collectively described as the estrobolome. After oestrogens are processed by your liver, conjugated forms can enter your intestine through bile. Certain gut bacteria produce enzymes, including β-glucuronidase, that can remove these conjugated groups. This can allow some oestrogen to be reabsorbed through the intestine and returned to circulation, a process known as enterohepatic circulation.
Human research has linked gut microbial richness and β-glucuronidase activity with patterns of non-ovarian oestrogen metabolism.
